I believe that old age begins when people settle into a rut and prevent learning something totally new. Your brain and body both lose their agility when not given fresh challenges to understand. Within the last decade I've been which makes it a place to learn at least one new thing every year, and pursue it with passion. I try to do something not the same as the things I know, in order to develop new ways of learning. Since I've Been a klutz, I have been concentrating on developing grace and physical coordination through activities like darts, rollerblading, tennis, yoga and most recently bellydancing. You never know what the coming year brings. I'm thinking my next project may be geometry, as I haven't messed with math for 20 years. I began into cross-stitch at the chronilogical age of 65 and have made many pictures since then, quite a few which I have sold - to help pay for the hobby. I used picture framing 4 years back at the age of 71 to frame my cross stitch pictures. I took up yoga 24 months ago, and calligraphy this past year (most of which I have framed and sold!). It's about 48 years since I last played piano accordion. However i am currently struggling through a book about quantum theory which is stretching my brain towards the limits. I'm within the united states, where advanced degrees DON'T come cheap. Though basically had the funds to work on a masters, it would be either in literature or philosophy. LOL more letters I possibly could tag behind my name if I chose to, that would have absolutely no effect on how I earn my living. I simply dabble with one of these hobbies--gain a degree of proficiency that i am happy with, then move on. I do not feel the need to become a specialist. I'm more the "creative" type than "structured", among my buddies so delicately put it, so learning programming wouldn't suit my temperament. It is our 50th wedding anniversary on 12 June and that we shouldn't host a party with friends, family, neighbours etc. Just where would you stop? And also the friend you missed is not a friend anymore - a whole lot worse when they are family! We live in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North of England - lovely country but far too cold for somebody in the deep South of USA. Sounds like an excellent way to have a 50th anniversary! An adventure, no stress. I'll attempt to make my method to the bookshop this Sunday and find out should they have the de Bono books. Would look forward to having someone to discuss all of them with. That was my favorite part of as being a student at the university--reading, exchanging ideas using the others. It always made the reading a lot more interesting when someone else noticed stuff that I hadn't. Or viewed it from a differing perspective. I miss that a lot.
