Bailey says pick Petero,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Bailey even went as far as to urge the selectors to pick injured Penrith veteran Petero Civoniceva ahead of him for the Four Nations tournament in Europe in October-November,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
At 29, Bailey is chasing his first NRL title and is so single-minded about the task he has not thought about the prospect of retaining his Australian front-row spot after playing in the Trans-Tasman Test in May.
"I've missed two tours with Australian teams because of injury and it would be good to go to England and France,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' Bailey said. "But there would be nothing better than to do a victory lap down in Sydney on grand final day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that is my priority.
"I don't want to sound ungrateful or not put my hand up [for Australian selection]. I'd love to be there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. But we've got to focus first on what we have to do here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I'm not sure where my head is regarding rep footy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].''
Civoniceva,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 33,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has not played since he tore ligaments in the foot in Origin II and with Penrith battling to make the finals may not get back on the field before the Australian team is named on October 5. But Bailey says the selectors should pick him regardless.
"He's the type of bloke they need,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' he said. "You saw how Queensland struggled without his leadership. Ten minutes from Petero is worth 20 minutes from someone else.''
Bailey played 75 minutes for the Titans in their 22-14 win over Souths last week and would love to play the full 80 against Cronulla at Skilled Park tomorrow. "But I think they feel they have to give me a few minutes off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' he said.
Titans Queensland Origin forward Ash Harrison revealed yesterday his recovery from a rib injury he suffered against the Broncos on July 24 had been slower than expected and he faced a battle to play before the finals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I did my ribs on the other side in Origin II but I was right in two or three weeks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' he said. "It's the fourth week now and progress has been very slow. In the last couple of days there were some good signs so hopefully I have turned the corner.''
Luke O'Dwyer is set to return from an ankle injury at lock for the Titans tomorrow with Esi Tonga back at centre after two weeks in the Queensland Cup,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Titans under-20s coach Steve Murphy will be elevated into a full-time role with the NRL squad next year alongside John Cartwright,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with noted schoolboys coach Rod Patison to take charge of the under-20s.
Meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Titans crowd favourite Chris Walker has finally resigned himself to the fact he will be parting ways with the Gold Coast at the end of the season. But that's not what hurts. Walker is angered and upset by reports this week that he's had a bitter fall out with the club over their unwillingness to offer him more money.
Yesterday he set the record straight. "I was never filthy at the club,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' said Walker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who will almost certainly head overseas next season. It would have been nice (to get a better deal) but that is business. That is what happens with football teams.
"Everyone eventually gets the tap on the shoulder or sometimes negotiations break down, that is just the way it is.''
It has been claimed Walker took a `parting shot' at the Gold Coast for not bumping up his contract by an extra $40,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 to keep him in a Titans jumper for 2010. Walker was quoted as saying the club's decision to withdraw their original one-year offer of approximately $110,000 a season and cut him loose showed a lack of `respect'.
The comments had the potential to sour Walker's final few games in a Titans jumper. Fans and club administration understandably took offence, considering the Titans have repeatedly stood by Walker through personal problems and injury since throwing him an NRL lifeline in 2007.
It fuelled a perception he was ungrateful. He admits he said it. But feels it was taken out of context. "There is a lot more to it than that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but they just focussed on the juicy bits,'' said Walker. "The Titans have been great to me and my family and all that sort of stuff. There is no parting shot here."
