Zack Greinke top list
ET is the deadline for teams to make qualifying offers to their eligible former players who became free agents. Among the bigger names on the market: Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton and Los Angeles Angels pitcher Zack Greinke.

"I think (Hamilton is) going to go out there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], test the market and then come back to us. No door's been closed," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said earlier this month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], , noting that the club would not be making a preemptive offer. "We're also very realistic about when a star player hits free agency at this point, the history of them returning to their original club. I think we have to prepare both ways and prepare the club for the possibility that he's not back. Josh Hamilton, Texas Rangers outfielder. Hamilton, 31, was the 2010 American League MVP and is the best player available (he hit .285 with 43 home runs and 128 RBIs this season). Of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is baggage of past drug and alcohol abuse, plus he has been injury-prone.
2. Zack Greinke, Los Angeles Angels righthanded pitcher. Greinke,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 29, is this winter's only huge free agent pitcher because the San Francisco Giants' Matt Cain and Philadelphia Phillies' Cole Hamels re-signed with their teams this season. He was 15-5 with a 3.48 ERA combined between the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Angels,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he wasn't the dominating ace the Angels had expected, though he went 6-2 with a 3.53 ERA after coming over in a trade.
3. Upton,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tampa Bay Rays outfielder. Upton, 28, appeared to be a superstar-in-waiting when he hit .300 as a 22-year-old in 2007 but hasn't fulfilled that potential in the five years since. He shows glimpses of that old upside, but he's more of a free-agent gamble than many had expected.
4. Edwin Jackson, Washington Nationals right-handed pitcher. Jackson, 29, took a one-year, $11 million contract from the Nationals instead of one of the lesser two- or three-year offers on the table. That gamble looks like it will pay off after he went 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA and his 1.218 WHIP narrowly missed being a career-best.
5. Michael Bourn, Atlanta Braves outfielder. Bourn, 30, had a strong offensive year (.274, nine homers, 57 RBIs and 42 stolen bases) and he should be in line for his third Gold Glove for his work in center field. Working against him: He plays the one deep position in free agency this winter, but he plays it better than the alternatives and he's the true leadoff hitter of the bunch.
6. Nick Swisher, New York Yankees outfielder. No free agent is a sure thing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but Swisher, 32,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is close,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], given his consistency over his career. In eight full seasons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he has hit more than 20 home runs every year and eclipsed an .800 OPS six times. He's not an All-Star, but a team can sign him now and feel confident.
7. Jake Peavy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chicago White Sox righthanded pitcher. Peavy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 31,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had a terrific bounce-back season (11-12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 3.37 ERA in 219 innings) and is relatively young. The White Sox presumably want him back, but the option on his contract will cost $22 million (with a $4 million buyout). Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers righthanded pitcher. Sanchez's stock had dropped since his move to the Tigers as he recorded fewer strikeouts than innings pitched,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but a strong postseason showing (1-2 but a 1.77 ERA in 20 1/3 innings) may have helped him. At 29,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his best years may be ahead, noteworthy since he has been healthy for three consecutive seasons.
9. David Ortiz, Boston Red Sox designated hitter. Ortiz, 37, was as productive as ever this season (.318,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 23 homers, 60 RBIs) though an Achilles injury limited him to 90 games. Now that the Red Sox have dumped a lot of salary they appear finally interested in signing the aging DH to a multiyear contract.
The following players, according to Baseball Prospectus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are among those who have contracts expiring or have the six years of service necessary to become free agents after the 2012 season. (* Player's contract includes 2013 option.)
