climbing the walls to escape the bores
At the outset of Lughnasa Live (RT 1), Gr inne Seoige says the Co Clare heritage park from which she was hosting the show was "surrounded by wild boars".
Sadly, we never reached see them. Instead, we'd to content ourselves using the tame bores whom she'd gathered within the encampment to celebrate the pagan festival of Lughnasa.
Chief among they were a number of Grainne's RT cronies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most famously her colleague John Creedon in the about-to-be-axed All-Ireland Talent Show. Before you take up residence alongside her about the encampment bench, he was shown climbing Croagh Patrick -- about the only devote Ireland to which he hadn't subjected us in the hugely tiresome RT 1 series, John Creedon's Retro Trip.
The climb, he told Gr inne,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have been "amazing", though we had to consider his word for that as the mist and drizzle had rendered it invisible.
Also alongside her was archaeologist and historian Chris, who, Gr inne promised, provides "the voice of reason" during this "celebration of lunacy" -- whereupon Chris told all of us about Lug, the deity behind the festival, who apparently was among ancient Ireland's "top gods". Or, as Gr inne put it: "He was the daddy."
Moya Brennan was available to warble 'She Moved Through the Fair' and Dungarvan chef Paul Flynn was elsewhere in the compound roasting a suckling pig, presumably for that eventual delectation of audience members who were dutifully seated on benches awaiting something -- anything -- to occur that might make their silent witnessing worthwhile.
Instead, Grainne introduced another RT colleague, youth-show presenter Sin ad Kennedy, who -- as we learned thanks to another film clip -- have been swimming in Galway Bay having a woman called Uta from Dusseldorf. Sin ad told us that for the past Ten years Uta have been doing this for seven hours a day. Then she told us she'd been doing the work for 15 hours each day. So that was it? And come to that particular, who was Uta?
Anyway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gr inne thought it "just amazing" while Sin ad thought it was "really tough to come up with words" for that experience -- words seemingly not being a requirement among RT reporters.
As to why, inside a celebration of Lughnasa, she'd been cavorting with the mysterious Uta and a passing dolphin -- well, as Grainne had explained when introducing her: "We've all heard about the folklore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but how about the sea lore?"
What, indeed? More pertinently, what on the planet was RT 's rationale in offering as its week's highlight a programme so staggeringly banal and boring?
Towards the end, a seancha who wouldn't shut up to told to do so by a desperate Gr inne was succeeded by another RT stalwart,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Colm Hayes, whose account of ancient Irish sports seemed so interminable it warranted another interruption from the presenter, though none was forthcoming. However, long before that at least one viewer had lost the desire to live.
In The Secret Life of Buildings (Channel 4),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], presenter Tom Dyckhoff had the big windows of his London flat boarded up so they only admitted as much light as windows on basic housing estates. Medically examined following a week of this light-deprivation, he was discovered to be both psychologically depressed and physically more susceptible to diseases along with other ailments.
This first of three programmes disclosed that the UK has some of the smallest homes in the european union which it was having a "devastating effect" on those who have to reside in them -- Dyckhoff pointing out that almost all people spend 85pc in our lives inside buildings.
"Developers and architects are letting us down," he argued, not only in the mean spaces they create but also in the cheap materials they use. It had been an intriguing start to a series that looks worth following.
Meanwhile, ITV offered us Homes from Hell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but these were only the usual horror stories about houses that collapsed from dry rot or dream holiday apartments that turned into nightmares. There have been no morals to become drawn or lessons to be learned, apart from that oldest of old reliables: caveat emptor.
More fun was this week's episode of If Walls Could Talk (BBC Four),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where the chirpy Lucy Worsley, who's a curator of historic palaces, provides the good reputation for the rooms we most frequently use: the kitchen, the family room, the toilet and the bedroom.
Focusing on all of the these, she visited a medieval great hall by which eating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], drinking, conversing and sleeping all took place as well as in which privacy wasn't an option when it came to bedding down for the night. And also the bedding itself,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as she demonstrated, was so that hitting the hay and striking the sack had literal rather than metaphorical meaning.
A Little Bit Eurovision (RT 1) checked out the career of Niamh Kavanagh, who won the accursed contest in 1993 together with her ardent rendition of 'In Your Eyes'.
Seventeen years later she came third last in the same shindig, during general she enjoys modest instead of stellar fame. Still, some people have always thought her dead sexy, while she's additionally a gay icon.
Also it was clear from her amiably down-to-earth contribution for this programme that her home every day life is very happy which she still loves performing. So good on her.
