They wag their arms about too much,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The women rated the men's ability on the dance floor and the scientific team worked out which moves had made the difference. It appears the mistake most men make is to use their arms too much.
Three body parts emerged as most important the neck,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the torso and the right knee, according to the report in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters.
'They did a little head nod with a big body twist and a big head movement from side to side, and then a big nod, a small body twist and a small head movement from side to side.'
It is thought that such twists and turns of the neck and torso are attractive because they signal a strong,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], healthy and flexible body.
Those flagging on the floor due to lack of fitness find it hard to do such moves for any length of time and so often resort to exaggerated swings and flings of their arms and legs.
These, however, do nothing to attract women with the exception of the right knee. Flicked in and out and twisted from side to side at speed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a nifty knee apparently catches a lady's eye.
'If a guy wants to impress he needs to do some yoga or pilates to improve his core body strength,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].'
David Brent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the cringeworthy manager played by Ricky Gervais in The Office TV comedy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], couldn't have got it more wrong when he strutted his stuff for his staff.
'David Brent's dance was dreadful because it was so stereotypical and rigid there was no variability,' said Dr Neave.
'He was moving his arms all over the place and our study shows that these are not very important when it comes to dance. We all remember John Travolta's arm in the air in Saturday Night Fever,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
'If you did that now you would either be having a laugh or be seen as a complete pillock. But at least he had good variability in his body movements.'
Laughing stock: 'Dad dancing' is often a highlight at weddings and other functions
Wriggling about on your own on a dance floor is akin to pretending you're holding a guitar and pretending to play it. Geekish ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]! Got no friends ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?

Describing yourself? Why does someone dancing alone mean they have no friends? Maybe they just really enjoy dancing! For me, dancing is about letting go, being expressive and above all, Enjoying yourself. I'm not the greatest mover in the world but i have a great time regardless.

Oh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], John, you've really given yourself away here. You haven't read the article,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have you? And you have serious issues concerning women,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], don't you?
I think you'll find that Fiona Macrae is describing research conducted by psychologists, not airing her own opinion. A lot of the words are,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact, quotes from a Dr Nick Neave who, one assumes, is a man. So I'm afraid you've kind of shot yourself in the foot here - but what the heck, that might make you niftier on the dance floor!
