Two enterprising women are having fun dabbling in hand-painted shoes.
LONG working hours that left her with little time for social activities got Irene Chang thinking about her future,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I may be to able handle it now but what happens when I am married and want to settle down?" mused Chang who was then working in a bank. Yee, saw it and suggested setting up a venture to create hand-painted products.
"That's what inspired this business. Besides, I also love painting," Chang said in an interview with Sunday Metro recently.
Yee,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a trained designer, creates most of the designs for the shoes while Chang, with a group of workers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hand-paints them at their office in Setapak, Kuala Lumpur.
The products are sold at kiosks called "Amaze" in The Curve,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mid Valley and Central Market.
Getting her stock of white canvas shoes from a local supplier, Chang tranforms the plain footwear into funky work of art using acrylic paint. The designs come from various fashion magazines which they look up to keep in touch with the latest trends.
Most of the designs can be described as cute but the main feature of the shoes is the bright and lively colours. As such, they are targetted at the younger crowd.
"Even then, we also have older customers who are young at heart. Most of our customers are young but there are older ones who opt for simpler designs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Chang said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], adding that she could paint up to 15 pairs in three hours.
The shoes, which are washable, are available as sneakers, flats,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], high and medium cut sneakers, slip-ons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], peep-toes and low platforms.
There are also shoes for children, with designs inspired by cartoons and comics.
"Customers can also suggest their own designs and we can do it for them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Chang, who supplies the shoes to both local and overseas distributors. Orders can also be made online.
A new range of formal shoes for ladies, featuring pumps and heels, will be released early next month. The designs are more subtle and feminine. On customers' request,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the outlet is also offering various hand-painted bags to match the shoes.
