While the celebrity chef had long thought she had Jewish heritage and a potential title in her family past,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], delving into the plight of her ancestors revealed much more than she had bargained for.

On an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? screening on SBS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sunday ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Beer makes the shocking discovering of her ancestor's philandering ways and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ultimately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], learns her great-great-great-grandmother was a convict thief.
The two criminals met when both were banished to the Australian penal colony,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I had no idea - that's what's been so fascinating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's a journey I know so little about," Beer told The Advertiser.
"He wasn't just a bigamist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was a trigamist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said of her great-great-great-grandfather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was convicted twice after three simultaneous marriages.
As it turned out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Beer's understanding that she was of Jewish descent turned out to be a dead end.
"I was brought up with the fact I was Jewish but I wasn't,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
On the episode,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Beer also reveals personal details of her parents' bankruptcy to the nation.
"You're so taken by the story you don't realise you're sharing it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she says.
Having been a fan of the BBC series of Who Do You Think You Are? ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Beer was "thrilled" to be asked to be on the Australian series but initially had to turn down the opportunity due to her packed schedule.
However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], having now finished filming her much-loved ABC series The Cook and The Chef ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she was able to make the time.
Now taking time out to spend with her five grandchildren and work at her Barossa Valley food business,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Beer said she was delighted MasterChef runner-up Poh Ling Yeow was filling her shoes at the ABC with a locally produced show - Poh's Kitchen - in the pipeline.
