Q7: Changing spousal money habits
Here is my question - are you able to give some practical suggestions and tips for helping your partner to alter their money-spending ways as well as methods to encourage them to make and follow a budget? Our situation is: I'm a stay-at-home mom of two and my husband is the sole provider, bringing in around $2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],800/month plus some additional benefits just like a gas card, computer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], business allowances, commissions, etc. We have a rental property which brings within $1,400/month.
My point in suggesting all of this is that we make decent money and yet every single month we're scraping by. I feel that a lot (but of course not all) of it has to do with my husband's spending habits (eating out, promising not to spend then doing the work anyway) in addition to his ability to coerce me into agreeing to buy things (aka, the $200 above ground pool sitting in our backyard purchased last week) which i know we can't afford it, since I am "in charge" of paying the debts each month. He'll tell me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Don't worry, I'll get the money…," yet he's always a day late and a dollar short, which has caused us to sink into some major debt. It hurts even more on the personal level because most in our bills and loans (minus his education loan) have been in my name,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because whenever we were first married, his credit was bad and was not able to qualify for anything. My credit has suffered SO much and i'm desperate to repair it.
I actually do my part by shopping frugally, couponing, not really buying anything personally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc. I'm certain there are more areas I can cut and that he certainly isn't completely at fault, but I feel like I'm making an effort to drag my very own weight. Slowly, we are creeping our way out of credit debt, but we still have approximately $3,000 (from $8,000) left, an automobile payment, and student education loans along with about $12,000 in collections for a hospital bill. I'm fed up with nagging him, especially because I feel guilty for nagging him about money he is earning, yet I'm SICK of being consumed with stress constantly, particularly when bills are due. I want help convincing him that people need to reform our money-spending ways, focus on a financial budget and then actually stick to it!
- Catelyn
You are able to lead a horse to water, but you can't lead him to drink.
Your best approach isn't to give him with tactics. If he doesn't care, he isn't likely to use them. He's got to have a genuine reason behind wanting to change, so that's what you have to focus on.
Talk about long-term goals with him. What does he desire to be doing in a few years? What's possible if he makes changes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? What's going to things look like without changes?
You've got to place the changes you would like him to make right into a context that he likes you. If he doesn't internally care about changing, it is simply not going to happen.
Going back few months, I have been dieting where I eat three eggs in the morning every morning. Which means that every four days, Time passes via a carton of eggs. As I keep tossing them, I can not help but wonder if there isn't a great use on their behalf I am not seeing.
- Brad
We like to use egg cartons - the paper-based ones, anyway - as firestarters. That it is pretty easy.
All you need to do is get ahold of or save the stubs of candles in addition to some sawdust (friends who do woodworking will be glad to put you in contact; if you don't have those, see if hardware stores have suggestions). Just fill each well with a few sawdust until it's mostly full, then melt some candle wax over it, filling the well and holding the sawdust in position.
Go ahead and take carton with you if you go camping or build a bonfire. Tear off a couple of of the wells and light those to get the fire going. It really works really, very well. If you aren't into camping, provide them with to friends who are involved with it - they'll really be thankful.
Q9: IRAs and tax rates
One thing's been bugging me lately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when i sock away increasingly more money into a Roth IRA and Roth 401(k). When I hit retirement, if 100% of my retirement earnings are in post-tax accounts, my taxable income ought to be zero. In that case, should I be saving much more right into a pre-tax accounts, like IRAs and standard 401(k)s?
It seems that, in combination with that, if my retirement income is substantially under my employed income (since I'm saving 20% approximately at this time), a standard IRA turns into a better investment since i have ought to be at reduced tax rate than I currently am while employed.
- Charlie
If you are using pre-tax investments for retirement, just like a 401(k), you reduce your taxes now in exchange for paying income taxes later. If you are using post-tax investments for retirement, like a Roth IRA, you do not decrease your taxes now, but you certainly lower them afterwards.
What's best? It really comes down to whether your income tax is going to be higher now or in retirement. Much of that has to do with government policy within the next 3 or 4 decades, which is very hard to predict.
Our approach to this problem would be to hedge our bets. We've got some in our retirement savings in pre-tax investments and the rest in post-tax investments. Our taxes are a bit lower now - but they're also going to be lower in retirement.
I am 40 years old and single. I'm currently employed in a good-paying job and also have been employed with similar company for nearly 18 years. My company happens to be being sold and my future is sort of uncertain (whose isn't really?). I currently make about 4k a month in gross pay with occasional bonuses. I've about 27k in liquidity contributing to 250k in a 401k which I bring about at the maximum rate contributing to 30k within an IRA. I also have about 100k inside a pension that I can roll into my IRA when the sale of my company closes. I also have a second vehicle that's worth about 10k that I would like to keep for recreational purposes becasue it is a 4wd which is taken care of but would sell as needed. My only debts are a more recent car with better gas mileage at 2% rate of interest with payments at $350/month and my mortgage that is at 3.75% and it is at $622/month. I've about 50% equity during my home. I got myself home 10 years ago and the chronilogical age of the roof in those days was Fifteen years so my roof is Two-and-a-half decades old and it is showing signs of break up. Not too long ago I'd a rough estimate of about 8k to change my roof along with a friend just explained someone complain about that does re-roofs in a really good price and that i just got that estimate at $4800 that we think is really good. My problem is that with the new ownership of my opportunity that I could find myself ready to be surplused and unemployed. So, I'm baffled as to what to do with my roof. It needs replaced but I recently started cutting out all unnecessary expenses anticipating the worst. But, I understand I'm destined for roof failure at some stage in the long run. Can you replace the roof now while employed or hold back until there are roof leaks (my home is an older home which i have done a substantial amount of upgrading to but comes with plaster ceilings that I'd like to replace at some point but not until I have a new roof, so ceiling damage is not of great importance and concern because of the condition from the plaster). My mother says wait but I am thinking I ought to go on and replace. What would you do?
- Angela
The bottom line is to make sure your homes roof doesn't fail before your career is on steady ground. Basically were inside your shoes, I would look for a "patch it up" solution that will provide you with a few more years using this roof until you are in a better situation to replace it.
Are there any known leaks? Are there any weak spots that may be identified? I'm not even close to a roofing expert,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but if you've someone who knows roofing and you trust this individual, speak with that person about solutions that may buy you a very little time.
If you're up to it, many such repairs can be done yourself. Here is a solid help guide to minor roof repairs that can help you receive through until things are in better shape professionally for you personally.
Got any questions? Email these phones me or leave them in the comments and I'll attempt to respond to them inside a future mailbag (which, by way of full disclosure, may also get re-posted on other websites that get my blog). However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I do receive countless questions each week, and so i may not necessarily have the ability to answer yours.
