It's time to channel jersey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Calamity! It appears that I have only one dress. This state of affairs has not gone unnoticed. Just last week a colleague mentioned it during lunch, saying how much she had always admired it. The stress was, of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], on the always. I replied by saying how I had always thought it rude to speak with one mouth full,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially when one mouth was very nearly full of focaccia.
But she had a point. I have become hopelessly attached to a dress. It not one dress, though (as I would have pointed out to Focaccia Face had I not taken umbrage and decided to talk to the waiter exclusively from thereon in), but a series of identical dresses in different colours,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bought on a mad whim at Wallis.
Now I know that very few mad whims materialise at Wallis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it being a rather orthodox member of our high-street community. But there I found myself, during those first rain-showers of summer, and there I fell for the dress.
It was in soft jersey, with a scooped neckline and a hem of just the right length (two inches above the knee enough to be entirely elegant and yet mildly coquettish,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a bit like Fiona Bruce). It had dear little capped sleeves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and came in french navy, apple green and a frankly flirty purple, each one a coup at £27.
The dress, bought on a mad whim at Wallis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had a scooped neckline and a hem of just the right length
I afraid I bought the dress in all three colours. My sister-in-law took one look at the apple green version which I wore to lunch in Putney that day and hotfooted it off to the nearest Wallis to bag her own,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leaving me with the bill for the sauvignon blanc.
Later that week, my mum fancied one too, so we dropped in on the Bournemouth Wallis to pick one up for her. My near neighbour Maude bought all three and one for her cousin in Boston. This dress was catching on.
As Focaccia well knows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the dress and I have gone about our business together throughout late summer and early autumn. We been out in towering heels and a showy wrap, in jewelled sandals and a cashmere cardie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in white plimsolls and a slouchy leather bag of the kind worn by girls who climb into VW camper vans to start another life upstate.
To say that my dress is versatile would be to do it a grave injustice. It is flexibility itself, an effortless garment and a doddle to throw on over a heavy midriff or a thunking thigh (not that I have thunking thighs I just saying it would if you did).
I only mentioning the dress now because it was part of the Wallis summer collection and is now no longer in stock. Look sisters, wearing the same dress for months on end might be regarded as a misfortune but to meet you wearing it too? Well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that simply seems like carelessness.
Before you throw down your magazine in a fit of peevish pique, there is a message here. Jersey dress. Drapey jersey dress. Buy lots. They are on-trend and on sale everywhere. You may even find one on a whim at Wallis.
From Left: ONE-SHOULDER SILK DRESS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], £213,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], TIERED SILK DRESS,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], £213, QUILTED JACQUARD SILK DRESS, £248
Until now, BCBG Max Azria was one of the US best-kept secrets; a destination label by the man famous for revamping the iconic Hervé Léger bandage dress for transatlantic fashion addicts who wanted a chic alternative to more expensive British high-street offerings.
