Boston Red Sox face a taxing issue in offseason
A box that might prevent them from signing free-agent closer Ryan Madson, reduce their leverage in trade talks for Oakland Athletics closer Andrew Bailey and temper their pursuits of free-agent outfielder Carlos Beltran and Japanese right-hander Yu Davish.
A box that's motivating them to explore trading shortstop Marco Scutaro and might even compel these phones do the same with third baseman Kevin Youkilis, though at this point there is no indication that the Sox are even thinking about moving "Youk."
The Red Sox,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after exceeding the threshold in each of the past two offseasons, will be taxed at 40 percent for each dollar they spend over $178 million,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 50 percent when they still bust the threshold next offseason and beyond.
On the other hand, if the Sox can remain below $178 million,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they'll be taxed for a price of only 17.5 percent the next time they exceed the threshold a powerful incentive to allow them to avoid big spending this offseason.
The Red Sox can create flexibility by signing designated hitter David Ortiz to some multiyear deal in a lower average salary compared to $14 million or so he would earn in arbitration.
They also can bid for the negotiating rights to Darvish knowing that they could backload the pitcher contract which his posting fee wouldn't be contained in luxury-tax calculations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Sox,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], do not seem wanting to get involved with Darvish,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], perhaps due to their mixed experience with another Japanese righty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Daisuke Matsuzaka.
unsure the timing this offseason puts us in position to become probably the most aggressive team, Cherington told reporters Friday.
Cherington might simply be bluffing; the Yankees, too, are hemming and hawing about their potential interest in Darvish,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and harbor their very own luxury-tax concerns for the future. Maybe both teams will bid for Darvish, not.
Among major-league free agents, Madson seems unrealistic because of the Sox current bind; he sought a four-year, $44 million contract using the Phillies earlier this offseason. Yet it highly doubtful Madson can get that sort of deal from another club. The Sox are the only big-money team still pursuing a closer.
Another free-agent right-hander,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Francisco Cordero,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 36,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is coming off an excellent season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but at a salary of $12,125,000. Or,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they could go cheap with Josh Reddick in right field. Cuban outfielder Yoennis Cespedes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a person in whom the Sox have interest, according to a major-league source, likely will receive a better deal from another team.
The rotation is yet another story.
The Sox could try to find the 2012 versions of Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon, the latter who is still a free agent. They are one of the teams speaking with the Athletics about lefty Gio Gonzalez,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the most coveted pitcher obtainable in trade. But again, they limited when the luxury-tax threshold is a genuine concern.
Trading Scutaro a person drawing interest in the Rockies, among other clubs would clear as much as $6 million. (The Sox decision to pick up Scutaro option looks more curious each day.) Jed Lowrie and rookie Jose Iglesias could cover short.
Replacing Youkilis wouldn't be as simple. The Sox top third-base prospect, Will Middlebrooks, needs additional time within the minors. Trading Youkilis who's signed for $12 million next season with a $13 million club selection for 2013 would not be problematic. Youk value is down after two injury-marred seasons.
It quite the box the Red Sox are in, one that there isn't any easy escape. Unless, of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they are saying,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "The heck using the luxury tax; we pay it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if required. Which, in the end,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], may be the very best in support of solution.
