Chet Latawiec was a national golf champion, a World War II veteran who told stories of dodging torpedoes and a successful shoe salesman who started on a shoestring budget.

A top amateur golfer who won the state junior title in 1938, he was a member of a team that won a national public-course event in 1958. He once battled 22-year-old Hale Irwin for 22 holes before falling to the future pro golfing great. Latawiec was 46 at the time.
"What I remember most about him was that he was good to people, a quiet man who embodied the best of Columbia Heights,[url=http://woolrichparkaschweiz.albirank.net/][b]cheap woolrich winter[/b][/url]," said veteran Anoka County Commissioner Jim Kordiak, whose father, Al, was friends with Latawiec.
"This was back in the heyday of the Columbia Heights business district. He was on the corner of 40th and Central Avenue. Chet's Shoes was a perfect fit for the neighborhood, as was the Latawiec family,[url=http://duveticapiumini.olimx.com/][b]duvetica jackets shop[/b][/url], Kordiak recalled. Polish immigrants, who met on the voyage to America, Chet's parents got by on his father's steelworker salary.
When Chet was 8,[url=http://rogervivierheelssale.webstarts.com/][b]roger vivier heels store[/b][/url], the Great Depression arrived. Kids called him "Rags" because of his old overcoat, said his son Chet Jr. For a boy trying to master English, there were no quick comebacks.
At 10,[url=http://duveticapiumini.olimx.com/][b]duvetica jackets[/b][/url], Latawiec took a job as a caddy at the Hilltop Golf Club in Columbia Heights. A fine athlete who would letter in high school in football and basketball, young Chet fell in love with golf.
At 15, he played in the first Twin Cities Rotary Club Junior Golf Tournament, at the Wayzata Golf Club -- and won. By 1957, he would be featured in Sports Illustrated.
He also served in the Merchant Marine and had several close calls, Chet Jr. said.
At home, he would always be a hero, said his other son, Doug. He didn't think he could earn enough money to raise a family as a professional golfer. But shoes seemed a good fit.

"He started the store with his cousin, who was also a good golfer. Their idea was that one could mind the store while the other played golf. It didn't work out that way."
