Everything about this digitally animated movie seems seen-before. Once the best features for kids quote, steal, borrow and mangle other movies, it's completed in a spirit of lively fun, such as the filmmakers have broken into an attic of movie ideas. The Toy Story franchise had terrific characters and a great situation and combined it with this wonderful air of 'anything can happen,' a really childlike sense of constant invention.
Gnomeo and Juliet seems like its emerged from a boardroom plan of action, in which the players sat down and precisely exercised the parts that will ultimately constitute an 'entertainment machine'. I imagine it went something similar to this: Do we possess the songs? Many from the issue is the screenplay. Case in point: Once the initial attraction between the two leads becomes established there's not a lot to allow them to really do. So, the movie gets swept up in sub-plots to disguise the fact that the only thing two gnomic love birds can perform is hold hands (and play wear an intrusive mock MTV clip to Elton John's risible 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart').
The voicing is ok; Emily Blunt is the best as a mouthy Juliet, but James McAvoy can't do much using the romantic lead, since his part includes bold boasts, and sullen defiance.
A minimum of the filmmakers had the wit to satirise their own problems; in one scene Gnomeo includes a quick talk to Shakespeare (Patrick Stewart as his most jolly camp) by what the narrative may have available for him, and Juliet. "That's a dreadful ending," complains Gnomeo, after hearing this news they're both supposed to end up, well, dead.
